This is about as interesting of a time being a Sooner fan as I can recall. You seemingly have half of the fan base who were ready to fire BV and the staff yesterday, versus another half of the fan base that thinks our roster & program were decimated by LR and the current group of players are mentally and emotionally incompetent of embracing BVs culture and scheme. Like everything in life, the truth is probably somewhere in the middle. As this season started to fall apart, I was firmly in the camp of giving BV time and patience. The roster turnover, overall loss of production, key NFL departures, loss of your star QB, not to mention installing completely new offensive and defensive schemes. As the season has progressed, though, I can’t help but become less and less forgiving and lenient with the on-field product.
Some concerning thoughts as the season ends:
1. Outside of a few individual efforts (Gray, Willis, Bowman) and one position group (O Line), this team has firmly regressed across the board. QB play is average, WR play is average (largely due to QB play IMO). RBs outside of Gray have been average , although Barnes shows flashes. Defensively, it’s been an abject disaster across every position group.
2. The play calling on both sides of the ball has been eyebrow-raising, especially on offense. Today we run an out-flanked reverse on 3rd and 3, a hitch route 4 yards short of the sticks on 3rd and long. We run more bubble screen than I’ve ever seen today and never even attempt to threaten the middle or throw an intermediate pass. I’ve never seen a team in more 3rd and longs this season then OU, it’s truly bizarre. One game is an aberration, but this has been a pattern though the season, especially in crucial situations. I said early in the season my big fear with Lebby is that his offense is too “gimmicky” with the tempo and dependence on RPOs and PA in the passing game. I stand by that as we sit today.
3. This defense is a mess, I have no other way to describe it. Guys out of position pre-snap, not even set against tempo offenses, consistent busted coverages and gaping holes in our zones against the pass. Beyond that, this team has the worst run fits I can recall in a long, long time. Worse than Ruffin & Mike, considerably worse then Grinch. For as bad as the passing defenses were under those guys, this year’s run defense has been equally bad if not worse.
4. This team completely lacks any type of discipline or football IQ. It really is one of the most aggravating teams to watch that I can recall. You can blame the players as much as you want, but at some point you have to look inward as a coaching staff and evaluate how you are communicating your message. If you have some players who simply refuse to listen to the message (which appears to be the case), show them the bench and play the young kids that you at least have a chance of one day reaching.
5. Small player note: I can’t think of a more inconsistent football player then Danny Stutsman. Flashes of brilliance, typically when he’s blitzing or running a ball carrier down side-side. But I’ve never seen a LB take on offensive linemen full body and get absolutely engulfed the way he does 2-3 times a game. It’s astounding how good (and bad) he can be.
Some musings about the future:
1. This roster will have (and frankly needs) a mass exodus of players. I believe our personnel is a lot closer to average then elite, regardless of what our past recruiting rankings indicate. I know BV is old school and wants to build his team with HS recruits, but reality is he may have to rely on the portal and JUCO if he wants to survive the next few seasons here. Getting a class of 30 HS guys and trying to win with FR and SO the next couple years is no easy task.
2. Piggybacking on that thought, I genuinely don’t think there’s a single position we shouldn’t be looking to upgrade in the portal. Defensively, this current roster is so bleak outside of Bowman and the young guys (RMT, RSJ, Kanak, Halton).
3. This is just my opinion and I’m sure some will disagree, but BV needs to take an introspective look at his coaching staff at the end of the season. Our special teams today were collectively terrible. Our defensive ends are undisciplined and make zero impact. They crash inside and lose containment, have no concept of leverage, and can’t play a downblock against the read to save their life. I know BV wanted to build a staff with “his guys”, but fresh (and experienced) blood might help. We are seeing some Clemson fans criticizing Dabo right now for that same mentality with how he has built his staff this year.
My final summation: I still believe in BV and will give him the benefit of the doubt heading into next year. But at the end of the day, he and his staff have improvements to make. If we don’t see improvement (at least 7-8 wins in year 2), I don’t see how that seat doesn’t start to warm up.
