Group effort critique

Leave your anger, frustration and disgust at the door and bring your experience based input on the subject of Sooner Football. Everyone is welcome, especially coaches.

I'll concentrate on the tech game. Can't really beat up BV for his decisions from yesterday. I remarked in the "game thread" seeing the DL getting pressure and the LB's in their fits. By the 2nd quarter, back to LB's anticipating where to attack instead of reading and reacting. LB's also continued to be late on their reads in pass coverage and OU gave up the edge too many times. Broiles and other defenders still taking bad angles. Proper angle of pursuit and staying on the ball carrier's back hip are fundamentals collegiate players shouldn't struggle with, especially late in the season.

Almost 700 yards of offense are all-time records at most schools so I can't really beat up Lebby. His conservative calls on 3rd down still are frustrating. Issues with the trick plays were the timing. The fake FG was with OU up 14 points. I'd of taken a for sure 3 score game over the possible 21 point lead. The play was there but the pass was dropped. In OT, the reverse throwback to DG picked up 13 yards but probably lost OU the game along with poor blocking by Harrison. An ugly duck of a pass by Stoops allowed a heavy hit on our QB. We had to waste 1st down with the wildcat while DG sat a play and then smartly tt sent the house after DG when he came back in. Both passes were so ugly it appeared they didn't practice the plays much.

I wrote more than I intended but the defense regressing back to poor technique and slow reaction is the old culture you can trace back to FUMS that I spoke of in a post a couple of weeks ago. We witnessed that culture had changed until midway through the ksu game. Need to develop a culture of expectations of success. Oh, the FG attempt looked good!

Theo Wease

For the first time in his career, he made the tough catches last night and won 50/50 balls. Pretty sure he has 2 years of eligibility left too. 2022 was his 4th season and 2020 didn't count and 2021 should allow for a medical redshirt. Was proud of how he played last night.

And the tweet below speaks volumes to me about the players buying into BV. Not saying BV won't fail, because he could. But let's look at Theo. He committed to OU because of TBOW and that offense. Was a 5 star recruit. He's had a very disappointing career up to this point. Then the best offensive coach in America bounces and a defensive HC steps in.

If anyone should've left after all of that it should've been Theo. But this dude has been beyond loyal when he could've easily bounced to some other good programs. He's committed to OU as a former 5 star recruit in a new offense, and under the direction of a defensive HC. Doesn't that mean a lot to you guys? Does to me.

Bama went 7-6 in Saban’s first season

And had 4 straight losses before their bowl game vs Colorado (a 6-6 team). A 7 pt win. They also lost to Louisiana Monroe at home. Yeah we sucked this season but don’t lose hope yet. Also, Thad Turnipseed started with Saban, joined Dabo at Clemson (also 7-6 his first season), and he followed BV to OU for a reason. Pete Carroll went 6-6 at USC his first season. I’m sure there are plenty of examples. BV will learn and get better as a HC and get the right staff and players for future success.

Bowl Prep / Young Core of Team

We all agree the year was shit - this thread isn’t to debate that in any way.

I’m quite an optimist typically so finding the positives in at least making a bowl game and getting the extra reps with new systems in place both offensively and defensively. I think it’s a pretty huge deal moving forward.

My question is who are the young guys (freshman and soph) you are most excited to get more reps during bowl prep and get ready to be some of the core contributors moving forward?
Portal season about to go nuts but let’s just stick to the current roster until we hear otherwise.

Fire away.

We've all had a rough 12 months.....

I still believe in BV and staff, but man this has been a tough year. Even in the Blake years, I don't remember looking back at three games that you lost (Baylor, WV, and TT) that you ABSOLUTELY had no business losing. And another, KSU, that could have easily been won. But that's what bad teams do. And bottom line, we're a bad team. Remember boys and girls, we're all in this shit show together. I absolutely believe it'll get better.

I Guess If You Say So GIF

A little context for what BV inherited…

Did some quick research into our bare cupboard:

2018 class: 5 players of 23 still at OU. Bret Walker is one of the 5.

2019 class (should be senior class): we have 10 guys still at OU out of 24 signed. Marcus Hicks, Kori Roberson included.

2020 class (should be junior class): we have 14 guys still at OU out of 23 signed. Bryson Washington, Kendall Dennis, Tre West (JAGs).

2021 class (should be sophomore class): we have 10 guys still at OU out of 16 signed. (Who signs 16 effing players in a class, TBOW?!?)

So, we have a total of 34 scholarship players here from TBOW’s last 3 years. 39 total from his recruiting classes. And many of them are not difference makers. That’s…how you get the results we are getting.
