Only 1 Game This Season

Only 1 game this entire season did we lead the game in time of possession. And that was against Kansas. Here are some numbers to ponder on.

OU- 21:27 UTEP- 38.33
OU- 24:42 KENT- 35.18
OU- 29:36 NEB- 30:24
OU- 24:56 K ST- 35:04
OU- 27:11 TCU- 32:49
OU- 27:01 TEX- 32:59
OU- 30:19 KU- 29:41
OU- 29:15 ISU- 30:45
OU- 26:18 BAY- 33:42
OU- 22:45 WV- 37:15
OU- 22:22 OSU- 37:38
OU- 27:26 TTU- 32:34

OUs opponents had the ball 1 hour, 33 mins and 24 seconds longer than us this season.

I’m all for an up tempo offense when the game flow calls for it. But wow, we got to help our defense out better than that next year.

Oklahoma is not a place where you “learn” to HC

… or “learn” to coordinate an offense. That’s what schools like Georgia Tech and Iowa State do.

Call the fans impatient, spoiled or entitled, whatever you want, but Oklahoma is one of the truly elite programs in America.

We shouldn’t have to wait for an OC to learn clock management or settle for a DC that’s never coordinated in his life.

Brent should be the DC next year, and Lebby needs someone with experience helping him game plan & manage game situations.

Red Zone Offense/Power Running Game

Looking at Lebby system it's hard to find optimism in the fact it seems like we can't lean on a power running attack. If you just look at rushing numbers things look good but those rushing numbers when we need 2-4 yards on third down and can't run the ball with success is a big issue.

2019 Central Florida ranked 101st nationally in Red Zone offense (77.36)
2020 Ole Miss ranked 111th nationally in Red Zone offense (72.73)
2021 Ole Miss ranked 104th nationally in Red Zone offense (75.81)
2022 Oklahoma ranked 54th nationally in Red Zone offense (84.44)

2019 Oklahoma ranked #19th nationally in Red Zone offense (90.20)
2020 Oklahoma ranked #3 nationally in Red Zone offense (94.34)
2021 Oklahoma ranked #1 nationally in Red Zone offense (96.23)

I'm not sure how to dive deeper into 3rd down converstion rate on short yardage, etc. Looking at our 3rd down conversion it's not awful. I feel like where we struggle is short yardage 3rd down.

What is Holding???

I had nothing better to do so looked at all the conference games and there were only 2 holding penalties called on OU opponents during conference play with 357 pass attempts not to mention run plays. One against Baylor and WV each. It's like they were told not to call holding no matter how bad it was, and there were some really obvious take downs. Did something change in the rulebook?

OT - 3D Tour of Pyramid of Giza

I'm a huge history buff and have always dreamed of visiting Egypt and the Great Pyramid. Unfortunately, I doubt that will ever happen in my lifetime for obvious reasons, but Harvard recently released this 3D tour of the Pyramid of Giza. Really cool stuff if you're into that sort of thing. See link below -

OT: Free Whisk(e)y

Alright I'm tired of all the negativity and figured I'd offer something up which I have plenty of and that's whiskey. I'd love it if others with some spare oz offered to join and we share some good spirits but if it's just me so be it.
Here's how it'll work. By noon on Wed (11/16/22 cst) post "in" and what type of whiskey you'd like to receive (american single malt, bourbon, finished brbn, region of scotch, Irish, Japanese, etc). I'll then draw a random name and you win You must be 21 or older verified with a pm and not be ungrateful for whatever is sent. The sample(s) will be sent blind with a note detailing what was sent that way a blind pour can be had or you can know beforehand...ultimately the hope is to get some positive mojo going and do a nice thing. Don't be a prick.

*note I don't have any btac or crazy bottles so don't expect a pappy or m20 etc but it'll be some solid stuff.
Will ship anywhere in USA

Lebby/BV learned nothing about clock management

From any of the games this year. You would have thought they learned a ton after the OSU game but that didn’t happen. We had leads of 17 on two occasions. On the next series we had possession times of the following:

.53 seconds
:40 seconds
2:13
:43 seconds
2:45
1:34
2:25
1:19
1:12

Is this not insanity? I just don’t get how you don’t understand that these were horrible drives. At the very least, slow it down for the defense’s sake. And this doesn’t even call into question the idiocy of the first play in OT. Let’s get our QB knocked out on some stupid play when you have been moving the ball on them. I just don’t get how we are supposed to expect that BV will turn this over next year? I hope he does and proves me wrong.

SIAP....Rankings Roundtable: Which late-rising prospect is the most exciting?

Wein....

In October, it was MAC programs that got involved. Then Wein's recruitment completely exploded with Oklahoma, USC, Virginia Tech, Ole Miss, Missouri, Kentucky, Cincinnati and Oklahoma State offering. Before things could get too crazy the high three-star defensive end from Nolensville, Tenn., committed to the Sooners shortly after his visit to Norman.

Oklahoma could be getting one of the biggest steals in the class as Wein has great size, tremendous length, he's an outstanding playmaker and he has a variety of moves both inside, outside, a spin move and so much more. His senior season film could be put up against any other defensive end in this class, he's that good.

REPORT CARD: Texas Tech

OFFENSE:

QB: Dillon Gabriel - 89 - Thought he played well but he just never feels in rhythm or something.
RB: Eric Gray - 87 - Man, he just keeps carrying this team, even when they won't let him.
WR: Drake Stoops - 82 - Kid is a fighter but I just don't understand how he's used sometimes.
WR: Marvin Mims - 92 - One of the few guys who had much to write home about tonight.
WR: Jalil Farooq - 81 - Some really tough plays, last week looks to have been an aberration.
TE: Brayden Willis- 85 - Got a little dinged up in pregame but was another strong night for him.
OT: Anton Harrison - 78 - Want to see that penalty, could he REALLY have been downfield?
OG: McKade Mettauer - 65 - Another game, another...meh.
C: Robert Congel - 60 - His snaps are an issue and just mess up the offensive rhythm.
OG: Chris Murray - 74 - Thought he was pretty physical, as usual.
OT: Tyler Guyton - 75 - I liked some of the flashes I saw but he still gets a little too extended sometimes.

Offensive Average: 78.9 (868)

DEFENSE:

DE: Jonah Laulu - 35 - Never saw him once all night.
NT: Jordan Kelley - 80 - Thought he actually was quite good, this might be low.
DT: Jalen Redmond - 65 - Created some pressure up the middle.
DE: Ethan Downs - 55 - I thought he had some moments but he also gave away the edge far too often.
LB: Danny Stutsman - 35 - How many times could Tech bounce and there be NO ONE to deal with it?
LB: David Ugwoegbu - 40 - His level of athleticism hurts this defense and I'll just never be convinced otherwise.
CH: DaShaun White - 45 - His whiff on Donovan Smith was like a reboot of his pre-2022 life.
CB: Woodi Washington - 60 - Thought he was well...not awful?
CB: C.J. Coldon - 77 - Was outstanding early and then faded considerably before a huge interception.
S: Justin Broiles - 40 - Don't think he made a single play all night.
S: Billy Bowman - 10 - I honestly can't think of a positive moment, no idea what his story was tonight - looked nothing like himself.

Defensive Average: 50.2 (552)

SPECIAL TEAMS:

K: Zach Schmit - 73 - Hit some big field goals and did a nice job in the kicking game for the most part...until the end (yes, this was added late).
P: Michael Turk - 84 - Had some nice punts on the rare occasion he was called on.
KR: Billy Bowman - N/A
PR: Marvin Mims - 75 - Had a nice return early on.

Special Teams Average: 77.3 (232)

Key Reserves:

RB: Jovantae Barnes - 73 - That drop may have changed the complexion of the game.
WR: Theo Wease - 85 - Showed up on some big plays for the Sooners but the rub route needs some cleaning up.
S: Key Lawrence - 63 - When he's on, he looks great but you can tell he's just always about a step out of position.

Reserves Average: 73.7 (221)

Team Average: 66.9 (1873)

My Overall Grade: 55

Breakdown:
This is a team that is in dire need of changes, how else can you say it? To bring all of this back in 2023 and expect it to be better is the definition of insanity.

Oklahoma is a team that can't deal with success and while some of that is clearly mental it also is a coaching staff that seems to let it's foot off the gas when they get out in front. There's just seemingly zero understanding of how to navigate in-game situations and while there are plenty of things a young staff is going to learn on the job there are too many things that we're seeing repeat over and over.

Loads of players will hit the portal, and I don't even have a huge issue with that but there's no reason on Earth Ted Roof needs to continue on in Norman. I've said it since he was hired, Brent Venables either needs to be the defensive coordinator, hire a young and exciting linebackers coach to teach who can recruit like a monster OR hire a coordinator with a lot more success in his background than Roof.

As far as Jeff Lebby, it's all I can do to acknowledge how key Jackson Arnold is to the whole future of this situation and any hope it has of righting itself in 2023 and beyond. But there's got to be some real introspection on clock management, complimentary football, and an understanding of how to use the entirety of the field rather than simply the flats or vertical passes.

Scoring Standard:

100-82: Playoff Contender
82-74: Big 12 Title Contender
74-65: Bowl Game Participant
65-0: 'I'll be hoooome for Christmas

Mental Capacity

Has anybody asked the question to why Kanak and Harrington didn’t see the field?

Kanak was debatably the best player on our D last game.

At the very least why are we not seeing Venables take White and Stutsman off the field for a drive or two for some teaching moments and let Kanak and Harrington get out there.

This worries me that Venables might not have the mental capacity as Head ball coach.

Almost every other pos is subbing besides our Cheetah and Lbs.
After KST game, I got made fun of and now…
