How can we have the most incompetent offense in the country? Obviously, the WR injuries have stunted us BUT

We have recruited very well
We have blue chippers all over the place on offense
We have way more NIL than 90% of teams out there

I'd love to ask these questions to the admins on this site, but there are just too many questions.

How do we not have a single offensive position group better than below average (D grade)?
How can our TE be SO bad at blocking?
How can our two blue chip QB's look worse than most non power QB's?
How do we not have ANY playmakers at ALL?
How is it that we have no real difference makers on the OLine?
How can we not have a single serviceable RB, with even avg. vision, that can hold on to the ball?
How can we be at the absolute bottom off college football in yards per play with all the athletic speed we have?
Maybe most damning...Why does everyone on offense look like they are scared to make a play?
Who is responsible for our offense completely flatlining after Lebby's departure?

This just doesn't make ANY sense. We've played some really shiity defenses this year and YET coming into today we were...

128/134 in yards per play
121/134 in yards per game
107/134 in rushing yards per play
117/134 in passing yards per game
122/134 in passing yards per attempt
130/134 in passing yards per completion!!
121/134 in total 3rd down conversions per game
128/134 in 3rd down conversion %

AND I'M GUESSING IT GOT WORSE TODAY!

I don't understand how this level of offensive putrescence is even possible with the athletes we have on the field. We absolutely have to be 134/134 in production from blue-chip players on offense in the country. Why are we getting nothing out of our players. Why has there been ZERO development. How is it that we haven't improved one ounce since the first of the year? How is it so obvious that there are no fixes in sight?

This all is mind boggling for how much effort we put into getting the best high schoolers in the country onto the field. We do the exact same thing on defense and we've become a amazing unit on that side. WTF is going on on offense???

I've never been one to say fire coaches, but I must say our offensive coaches are getting less production from the talent level at their disposal than any team in the country. BV NEEDS to do something ASAP.

An info-packed read that I think many of you will find insightful.

Offensive is just poorly coached. That’s it.
Seth Littrell, who has never had any great offense at any stop in his coaching career, and who played fullback, looks to be unable to put out a well oiled, cohesive unit with a confident and well coached QB. This is the danger of nepotism. When I listen to Joe Jon Finley and Littrell, I just don’t hear innovative, overly intelligent, creative and detail oriented guys. I hear tough dudes who played for OU and know some ball. Joe Jon hasn’t produced or recruited a single TE with any serious long term NFL prospects (Brayden Willis didn’t make the 53 man roster). Looking at Littrell’s coaching history I can’t remember a single good team/offense he coached. Texas Tech, Indiana, Arizona, North Carolina, North Texas- 0 memorable offenses that he’s been in charge of or contributed to. Yes, these two are dealing with many injuries across the board. And the offensive line isn’t the most talented. But you can put bandaids on things and scheme around deficiencies. The verdict is this coaching duo is well below the standard of a national championship coaching staff on offense, and the results show it.

JA still has his RS year available to him. The way Hawk plays, there is a high likelihood that he is at least going to need to come out for a few plays here and there. Heck, with our injury luck this year... Might be more then a few plays sadly.

If you are JA... have you told the coaching staff that you will help MH develop but that you want to RS this year and are not available to come into a game. Personally, I think I would like to see Casey come in anyways. I don't have any ill will towards the kid and honestly would not blame him. Now... If we are down TWO QB's.... there might have to be a difficult discussion. He did take the NIL money and scholarship.

Sidenote: Where do you think JA transfers to? Does he follow Lebby to Miss. State? I think he will have a LONG list of suitors that think they can fix him. Just don't go to USC buddy

I’ve seen and heard lots of discourse among fans, reporters, local media, and national analysts on the OU offense. It seems like the focal talking point has been distilled down to “Is it the scheme and play calls (coaching) or is it the talent and execution (players)?”

This type of debate almost implies that the primary fault of the offense should either be placed on the coaches OR the players.

I see and hear comments about running backs missing holes, linemen missing assignments, Hawk missing open receivers, TEs failing to block, WRs running wrong routes, failed blitz pickup from RBs. The list goes on and on. I think all of those observations are extremely valid and highlight a massive lack of execution.

My issue is that we seem to have some folks who then try to imply that lack of execution is solely attributed to players and not coaching. It’s not everyone, but there are definitely some people who are using execution as a shield to excuse this offensive staff for the poor performance.

My frustration is that coaching football isn’t just about scheme, concepts, Xs and Os, and in-game play calling. In reality, successful football is much more about sound fundamentals, guys being in proper alignment and position, executing their individual assignments, and being put in position to be successful within each play. The lack of execution and development of this offense should be directly attributed to the offensive coaching staff.

In terms of putting players in position to execute and be successful:

If Taylor Tatum can’t understand the difference between run plays hitting right vs left, he should never see the field. If Hawk is a single read QB right now, why are we running sprint to one side of the field and narrowing his ability and space to tuck and run? If Bauer Sharp can’t block, why is he repeatedly being inserted for in-line blocking in the run game? If Fbechi and Sexton can’t pull, why are we attempting gap scheme run game?

At some point execution and player development needs to be taken into consideration with regards to coaching in addition to scheme and play calling. There isn’t a single offensive player who is better this year vs last year (save for Barnes). Even if you want to point to how many new guys we have on offense vs last year, no one is looking better at this point in the season vs. the first game (maybe Tarquin…I guess Kearney?).

BV comes out today and essentially says he doesn’t believe in the benefit of mid-season coaching changes. Normally I’d agree, but this thing is snowballing into an unmitigated disaster. I will be genuinely shocked if we score more than 13 on Saturday. I know it’s cliche, but as the saying goes: the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

I will conclude with a comparable CFB situation here in Indiana. Purdue fires Graham Harrell a few weeks ago. They elevate an offensive staffer to call plays, and yes…they initially struggle. Only score 6 points against Wisconsin. However, this past weekend the HC Ryan Walters (a defensive HC who calls the defense) took over the offense and they scored 40 on the road against Illinois. Think about that for a second. You’re telling me Kevin Johns couldn’t implement some changes that just might lead to some different results?

After the TN game I felt very confident about BV’s direction and mindset towards making difficult decisions should they be required. After today’s presser, I feel the complete opposite. It seems that BV is so process driven and believes so much “in the work” that he thinks they have a chance of actually salvaging this thing as is. I’m just having a hard time seeing it.

I’ll keep cheering for this team and I do hope for the best, but man, it is hard to have any positivity right now about the direction of this year’s team and, more importantly, the program as a whole.

& I’ve never seen not just the product on the field this bad, but when it comes time to answer for them or adjust for inefficiencies it just only gets worse. I’m soooo tired of the excuse that our starting wide receivers out. IDGAF. If you’re wearing this inform step the fk up or transfer to a small college. I’m so tired of people saying “well who will do the play calling if SL is fired?” My answer to that is ANYONE will be better than what we have witnessed over the last 5 weeks.

Brian Clinton. I heard you on yhr pod cast… you said you didn’t have any problems with the play calling. My advice to you is watch it on tv and not the field and maybe you’ll be watching the same game as us. You may be a numbers guy but anything that’s not on a piece of paper you may as well be blind.

I’ve been a fan for 34 years. I have never seen it this unorganized. There is 0 emotion in any of the coaches faces. It’s honestly embarrassing. I truely feel for the ones who actually care. And after this weekend the only ones I think that care are a handful of the fans and donors. Sad times we are in. I’m not the one to call for a coaches job. That’s above my pay grade but something has got to give so let’s start there and stop beating around the bush?

Yep, I gave it a few days to let myself cool off and not speak on purely emotion. Well this is what you get. People spend thousands of dollars to go these games including myself and this is what we get? Honestly embarrassing.

Why do we insist on playing linemen that are "hurt" and CAN'T run? Why isn't EPL playing in some capacity, simply for the fact that he can "run"? We've got dudes in there that quite simply can't move! It's so odd that playing a player at 50% health is better than someone at 100%.

Let me preface this thread with this. From my perspective, this is meant to be a general question and honest discussion. What it is NOT is me asking what is up with any OU player.

The OUInsider podcast got me thinking about this today. Honestly - really have not paid much attention to specifics on injuries beyond... Is "x" player back. if not... Then they are not. And Parker did make a fair comment that it is "non of my business" what is specifically wrong with X player. Yep. Called HIAPPA. And if the player did not tell you themselves guys... that is a HIAPPA violation as well

With that said - the term "Soft Tissue" injury seems new to me as it relates to coaches reporting injuries. Usually more specific. High Ankle Sprain as an example.

A quick Google returns: Soft Tissue Injury = A soft tissue injury is: damage to the muscles, ligaments, or tendons, which are the soft tissues that connect bones and muscles. Soft tissue injuries can be caused by a number of activities, including: Sprains, Contusions (bruises), Overuse, and Concussions

Why is BV using this term? I have and continue to assume he is just being evasive with our opponents. But SEC availability kind of takes the edge off that benefit I would think. So starting to wonder if there is not more to it. Based on the Google definition, I would assume a "soft tissue injury" would NOT NORMALLY be a season ending injury. But seems to be that potential for one or two of our players.

Again - Mainly curious what others think. I actually enjoyed the discussion during the podcast today and it got met thinking. Wanted to continue to discussion.

Seems to be a ton of varying takes on whether Burkes will play vs Texas. Parker you seem to think he has zero chance of playing, yet Venables and a few other entities believe he will play. At this point I would take Gavin Freeman back at receiver and suffer through the 7 yards losses on jet sweeps. Our receivers are made of glass it seems.

Brent Venables talked a lot about the OU's QB room on Tuesday, including whether Jackson Arnold could be redshirted or if turning to a two-QB system could be an option.It's clear there's a lot on the table for Venables to consider.

So many excuses still pouring in explaining Seth’s crappy offense.
Well, just look at Libby’s offense vs texas yesterday . They moved the ball , rushed 150 yards vs #1 and the vaunted Texas DL . With a backup unknown QB , moving the ball creatively.. It was 7-6 almost at halftime and stayed close until late .
Better offensive play calling , coaching , and having an offensive plan . Lebby doing this in a few months with less talent and resources , and bad defense to complement.
The excuses for Seth have to end .

It seems inevitable that OU will move on from Littrell and Joe Jon Finley. It's just a question of when. If it does happen, who would you like to see OU pursue?

How many current players on offense and defense transfer at the end of the season because of how things have going this year and how many more recruits do we lose. My fear is this could get a lot worse again before it starts to get better.
