The ongoing situation with two huge potential visitors this weekend (Mon 2:15pm)

We’ll have the full list posted by EOD, but I’m told Oklahoma is set to host four-star LB and Miami commit Elijah Melendez this weekend. Melendez is a player the OU staff is exceptionally high on, and they will make a legit effort to flip him.

Oklahoma also expects Linkon Cure on campus. I am scheduled to see Cure in person tomorrow, so I will confirm this firsthand, but folks in the Switzer Center are under the impression that the Goodland (Kan.) native will make his first trip to Norman this weekend.

******

UPDATE Mon 7:00pm: Didn’t take Miami long to put the kibosh on Melendez’s visit. He’ll be back in Coral Gables instead of Norman this weekend. So that one is history. Retracted a previous update on Cure, however, as he and I had a misunderstanding regarding his basketball schedule. I may have spoken too soon in asserting that the visit was off. Stay tuned.

UPDATE Mon 9:50pm: Confirmed it 100 percent. Cure is indeed not going to attend the junior day.

UPDATE Tue 10:00am: This is the fluidity of recruiting exemplified. Oklahoma talked to Cure late last night, and now they expect him on campus this weekend after all. I have no idea what I should think, or what you should think, at this point. One source who’s also been privy to the rollercoaster told me, “It’ll be a coin flip on Saturday.” That’s a sentiment with which I would concur.

NIL at OU question

I have been trying to figure out what exactly happened at Tenn with their NIL and it seems like there are two accusations by the NCAA.

1) Collectives cannot talk NIL with a player in advance and the the player turn around and use that for the basis of making his decision on where to attend.
2) The Collective flew Nico Lamaleava across country free of charge (which would be a recruiting violation).

In a JD Pickell Podcast he raised the question about the 2nd accusation: Well isn't everybody doing that these days"?

My question for anyone in the know about the OU Collective, is Oklahoma doing this? I thought the rules were that the school could pay for the trip if it is an official visit, but if it is an unofficial visit, it had to be paid for by the recruit or his family. For a 3rd Party to pay for it would be a recruiting violation. Is JD Pickell correct, is the rest of College Football having the Collectives pay for unofficial visits?

EXCLUSIVE: Oklahoma trending positively for elite DL Trent Wilson, who visits in March

An exclusive interview with the four-star DL here. He's very high on OU's board, and the early vibes are good.

EXCLUSIVE: Four-star DB Cobey Sellers talks latest Oklahoma visit, says he may make a decision rather soon

Straight from the horse's mouth here in the story, but Oklahoma solidified their edge in this battle over the weekend. Sounds like this one could wrap sooner rather than later... pun intended.

DrummBeat: Big OKPreps 2026 DT visiting Feb 3rd

I've been sitting on this one for several days due to the first big JR Day being the priority, but the Sooners offered 2026 Owasso (OK) DT Tahj Overton on January 19th to join a handful of P5 programs that have already been pressing for the elite OKPreps DT early.

I spoke with Overton last week and the Owasso star DL told me that OU was a huge offer for him (obviously). Overton also said that he would be visiting Oklahoma on February 3rd, so add him to that list of visitors that will be in Norman on Saturday.

Overton is listed at 6-3 and 275lbs already. He is picking up a lot of steam on the recruiting trail, but the Sooners throwing their name in the hat early should play well as things continue to heat up for him.

We will update you all on Overton after the visit.

DrummBeat: Transfer OL update | 5-star OL change of plans and visiting OU? | Another big junior day upcoming

*** I will start with Geirean Hatchett and Landen Hatchett. I know we have been saying that it's something that the longer it takes, the more it seems OU may be struggling to pull them from UW in the end. Well, that may not be 100% the case, with a source this morning saying, "Things seem to be moving in the right direction there for the Hatchett brothers." The source also added, "Coach [Bill] Bedenbaugh has two spots for them, so if they choose OU, it's an easy decision to take and make room."

What I can add to that is that OU has remained very aggressive in their pursuit of the Hatchett brothers, but at the same time, I have yet to have someone 100% say that both are headed to Norman. On top of that, the brothers have also been in contact with the UW staff about remaining in Seattle and their home state. We will continue to dig into this and reach out to sources in the Seattle and Norman areas. Updates will come when we get more information, but that has to be some good news for Sooners fans this morning, with sources now feeling like things are moving in a positive direction for OU.

Just wouldn't get too overly excited with how fast this stuff changes. Just 24 hours ago, I heard that the OU visit went extraordinarily well, but with no commitment on Geirean Hatchett's visit and them meeting and talking with family and UW, it seemed like it may not be looking 'positive' toward OU. However, we will see if the Sooners can hold onto this momentum they have supposedly been building, per sources. So stay tuned.

*** Another positive note is that sources around Norman are starting to feel as if 2025 Lewisville (TX) five-star OL Michael Fasusi could be in Norman this weekend for the Sooners' ELITE JR Day. Obviously, we have also checked with Fasusi himself, and he told OUinsider, "Not 100% sure on it just yet, but I will let you know when I am."

That's a far cry from where things stood over last week, with Fasusi telling this reporter and others that he was headed to Oregon for an unofficial visit. Naturally, if Fasusi makes it to OU, the Oregon visit would seem to be off. That said if Fasusi doesn't make it in this weekend, there is also ANOTHER big JR Day that could host Fasusi in the next few weeks before the dead period in February. That would be February 3rd. Parker will have more on that JR Day, but there are a lot of targets making it in that weekend as well, so I am told that OU went from thinking it would be a quiet weekend to making it another big recruiting weekend.

We will keep you abreast of the Fasusi situation and let you know if he will 100% make it in, but remember that he initially had plans to be in Norman in Feb or March, so with the five-star looking to be back at OU even earlier than expected shows where the Sooners stand with the elite 2025 OL early on.

Edit: Missed Fasusi tweet yesterday saying Oregon 100% off. Said it was when we spoke this morning. Didn’t see tweet. My apologies saying “naturally, it would seem Oregon visit is off.”
