Too much competition and losing Simon hurt the show. It's run it's course. Frankly, I am sick and tired of all the "reality" shows on TV. I have pretty much quit watching the big three networks especially evening TV.
Yep, they all severely abuse the word 'reality' when, on deeper inspection you find out they're obscenely scripted and staged. Fool me once...

Finally. But why wait until 2016? Does anybody even watch it these days? I like the show with Howard Stern on it. Can't recall the name of it.
Unlike Survivor, Idol has been dropping steadily for years. Survivor is still going pretty strong and through the years has created a very loyal fan base.
Yep, it's all about the money.
At one time due to their extreme viewership, Idol was commanding and getting revenues per ad second only to the Super Bowl.
