The main problem we have is that our expectations are too high. We aren’t on the verge of winning a national title and the sooner (no pun intended) that we accept this the better off we will be.
Anyone with any knowledge of football can watch us and know that we aren’t an elite team. Poor development, baffling mental mistakes, lack of physicality, etc. We have talented players, Lincoln is an excellent recruiter. However, we have below average development and rarely maximize the potential of our players. The list of 5-star busts for OU over the years tells the story.

At this point we are at least 3-4 years away from competing for a title and that’s only if we are able to change the culture of the team. Whether that’s getting rid of Wiley, Grinch, Bedenbaugh, hiring an OC (AND A ****ING SPECIAL TEAMS COACH!!!) I don’t know but clearly changes are needed to take the next step. Regardless of Lincoln’s favorite phrase, we are not “close”.

As long as we don’t go into next season expecting to magically turn the corner and win a title we will enjoy the season more.

No, the sky isn’t falling. We aren’t Texas, USC or Florida. But we aren’t Bama, Georgia or Ohio State either. We are not a couple of recruits away from competing. We have to completely overhaul our offensive line and also somehow find safeties that are able to both understand the most complex play calls known to man (apparently?) and also be an above average athlete. We have to find receivers capable of getting separation and coming down with contested catches. Getting blanketed by 3star Okie Light doesn’t bode well for how we would perform against an actual elite defense. I shudder to think of how we would look against Georgia. Yikes.

We should have expectations of being a Top 10 team, which is great! 90 programs would kill to be that! But this notion that we are about to break through and win it all is just setting ourselves up for a massive letdown year after year.
